  In-depth Review: VENEZUELA, STEFANIA FERNANDEZ
by Nina Cleopatra

Stefanía Fernández Krupij, (born September 4, 1990), is a pageant titleholder, from Mérida, Venezuela, who will represent her country, Venezuela, in the Miss Universe 2009 pageant in the Bahamas. Fernández won the Miss Venezuela 2008 title in a pageant held in Caracas, Venezuela on September 10, 2008. She was crowned by the outgoing titleholder, Dayana Mendoza, Miss Venezuela 2007 and Miss Universe 2008. Fernández also won the "Miss Elegance", "Best Body" and "Best Face", titles. She became the second Miss Trujillo to win that title since the Miss Venezuela pageant first began in 1952. The first was Bárbara Palacios, Miss Venezuela 1986 and Miss Universe 1986. Stefanía is of Ukrainian, Galician and Polish origin. She practices tennis and swimming. Her father was kidnapped in 2005 in Barinas, Venezuela for 5 days.

Aha! The infamous Osmel Souza! Top Czar of Beauty!
His bold and strict taste in beauty has made him such a
notorious character in beauty pageantry! His biggest
enemies? Ugliness and cellulite!!

PRESENTATION - Rating: 9.00
She is driven, self-assured, intelligent, and she understands the psychology of the realities of pageant world. She’s also very confident in herself and knows how to use her capabilities to its maximum potential. Unlike the two former Venezuelan Miss Universes Dayana Mendoza and Alicia Machado, Stefania does not share the same charismatic, energetic and bubbly Venezuelan personality that is very appealing to the international judges. She has a tendency to be boring at times.

In this fixed photo you can notice why Stefania is one of the heavily bashed candidates this year.
She's being criticized for her long neck! I still think that her neck is one of her strongest features!

FACE - Rating: 8.80
I definitely have to be honest to say that there's nothing really outstanding with Stefania's facial features that almost come across into the "plain" zone! Her Polish heritage does give her a touch of European air! I did notice that her face is also asymmetrical but I wouldn’t worry too much about this as many other girls have won the title of Miss Universe by having an asymmetric face! I'm having tons of trouble with how she uses her mouth, and pushes her lips forward to show a somewhat higher level of fierceness but she fails miserably, as it totally damages her soft looking face and to simply put: it does not work for me!

BODY- Rating: 9.15
She has an incredibly elongated body, giving her great range of extension that boosts her inherent elegance. Physically, Stefania is near perfect. She possesses great proportions & packaging- from the neck down. I just wished she could bring the same quality from the neck up. Many people have complained about her long neck, but for me it’s actually one of her strongest points! Stefania’s neck makes her even more regal. That swan-like look & mannequin-like features certainly make her unique and desirable!

CATWALK SKILLS - Rating: 9.05
With a slow and highly controlled pace, Stefania seems a little bit too slow and somewhat stiff when she graces the stage. Her trademark is definitely how she arches her back almost into a defying gravitational bearing. It also looks like she's going to break up her spine yet it positively gives her a great amount of sharp edginess to her presentations. My only concern is her tendency to lose her form whenever she walks forward because it makes her lower body look wider and gives her a big amount of trouble when it comes to her arms placements. Sometimes she also looks as if she doesn't know exactly what to do with her arms when she's on the runway due to her exaggerated posture. Nevertheless, she has mastered the art of gliding sideways.

NINA RECOMMENDS
I still have mixed feelings about Stefania and I can’t help but keep going back and forth with her. Sometimes she looks stunning and other times she looks plain. I can't quite put my finger on what really makes me feel insecure about her. My primary recommendation for her is to sport a lighter hair in Bahamas. When it comes to gowns, dark colors suit her well. She should wear a very tight couture dress to mark out her well proportionate body which is a great canvas for Osmel to work and experiment with! Finally, here’s my message to all missosologists out there, and I’m going to caption this:

VENEZUELA SHOULD NEVER BE UNDERESTIMATED! IT IS A POWERHOUSE NATION THAT HAS TRIUMPHED FOR MANY DECADES AND THIS YEAR IS NOT GOING TO BE AN EXEMPTION!! THE LACK OF PUBLICITY PHOTOS AND APPEARANCES FROM STEFANIA CLEARLY SHOWS THAT THERE'S A HUGE STRATEGY BREWING FROM OSMEL'S BEAUTY TEAM! I REPEAT, DO NOT OVERLOOK STEFANIA OR YOU WILL BE SURPRISED! ALSO YOU SHOULD EXPECT HER TO WEAR A VERY BOLD AND RISKY EVENING GOWN DURING THE FINAL NIGHT! Good luck Stefy!

DAYS GONE BY...
Welcome to the greatest powerhouse of Miss Universe! The Miss Venezuela contest is the national beauty pageant of Venezuela and has been held since 1952. It is responsible for selecting the country's representatives to the Miss Universe, Miss World, and Miss International pageants (amongst others). Under the direction of Osmel Sousa, Venezuela has accumulated more international titles than any other country, including five Miss Universe winners, five Miss World winners, and five Miss International winners. Alexandra Braun Waldeck, who won Venezuela's first Miss Earth title in 2005 was first runner-up at the Miss Venezuela pageant, and received training from the organization, although she was not one of their official titleholders.

Once a candidate is short-listed for the pageant, she begins an intensive training program which can last for six months. She receives coaching in speech, physical fitness, make-up, modeling, and all the other skills required for the competition. Plastic surgery and cosmetic dentistry is optional and some delegates use padding. As the Miss Venezuela broadcast lasts up to four hours long, with countless musical numbers and dances, rehearsals require weeks of preparation. Contestants also participate in official photo shoots (lately done by Ivan Dumont, after several years by Daniel Alonso) and also fittings by fashion designers. The evening gowns worn by candidates are a major source of politicking by Venezuela's domestic fashion houses, with top designers such as Mayela Camacho, Ángel Sanchez, Durant & Diego, and Jose Maria Almeida selecting candidates that they will dress for the final night, while other, newer designers compete to present designs for the pageant.
