Not Seen Not Heard

Marifer Cornejo

One of the great characteristics of a Big4 pageant is that its winner has a set of platforms by which she will tirelessly pursue in the entire duration of her career. Be it AIDS awareness for Miss Universe, charity for Miss World, international understanding for Miss International or environmental issues for Miss Earth, the Big4 pageants can be clearly delineated from other wannabe pageants - okay let's mention it - from Miss Supranational and Miss Tourism Queen International. This is not to destroy or malign Miss Supranational or Miss Tourism Queen International but you have to wonder how come it is being pushed to be considered as major pageant when nothing, as in NOTHING, is heard from its winners from the time they get crowned? Sure, these pageants are great and worthy to watch but what platforms are they pursuing?

But wait? What about Miss International? Isn't that we haven't heard from Marifer Cornejo for a long while? Here are the reasons why it seems Marifer is the least heard among the Big4 winners:

1.) It is not so much about being heard it is more about what is being done. The Japanese culture of modesty and honor requires good works without much grandiosity. There are news about Marifer's works but not much fanfare is being directed in it. For example, Marifer is involved with UNICEF in providing aid to children who are victims of the Sendai earthquake.

2.) Unlike Miss World, Miss Universe or Miss Earth where a specific national pageant exists say Miss Earth Reunion pageant or Miss Universe Canada pageant or Miss Thailand World, Miss International in most cases is relegated to as a component or secondary pageant at national levels. Hence, aside from her Miss Ecuador appearance, you won't see Marifer attending a national pageant to help crown a Miss International contestant.

3.) Miss International is not that press savvy in the world of English language. This language barrier is a major reason why not much is relayed to the rest of the world. Miss International is the ONLY major international pageant based in a non-English speaking nation where Facebook and Twitter is not really the top social networking sites.

With these reasons, Miss International 2011 Marifer Cornejo did not slip right into oblivion. If there is not much heard about her, it is mainly because this is typically what Miss International is .

Miss International '11 Beauties at UNICEF

Miss International 2011

Miss International 2011 Fernanda Cornejo, 1st runner-up Jessica Barboza and 2nd runner-up Tugsuu Idersaikhan visited the Japanese headquarters of the UNICEF as part of their official activities. UNICEF had played a central role in post-war Japan as this arm of United Nations was tasked to help the children who were victims of the World War II. Today UNICEF (United Nations International Children's Emergency Fund) is involved in helping children especially who lost their families during the Sendai earthquake. UNICEF is also involved in helping children around the world to have access to clean water, decent classrooms, among others.

The Miss International pageant through ICA (International Culture Association) is one of the proud sponsors of UNICEF, providing monetary donations inorder to help young children in need.
