Leila visits Children's Medical Center

NEW YORK, NY - JANUARY 19: Miss Universe 2011 Leila Lopes visited the pediatric patients at Cohen Children's Medical Center on January 19, 2012 in the Queens borough of New York City as part of the Project Sunshine initiative.  A-la-chef Leila and her band of dynamic volunteers staged the Sunshine Chefs nutritional cooking program at the Medical Center. A group of pediatric patients  joined Miss Universe 2011 Leila Lopes to decorate chef's hats and make their own 'Snowman on a Stick' nutritional treat - which included bananas, grapes, apples, shredded carrots raisins, whole grain pretzel sticks cut up and assembled on bamboo skewers. They demonstrated the recipe while children all over the hospital joined along via live streaming video to their rooms.

Working with hospital and Project Sunshine staff, Miss Universe discussed the importance of preparing healthy recipes that can be easily replicated at home.  After working with various types of healthy foods, Miss Universe and volunteers then decorated chef hats and aprons for her enthusiastic audience.

Project Sunshine is a nonprofit organization that works closely with the Miss Universe Organisation and provides free educational, recreational, and social programs to children facing medical challenges and their families. “Miss Universe is a stellar and caring volunteer,” said Project Sunshine’s Executive Director Beatrice Kernan. “She brings light into the lives of young patients at their most vulnerable time, bolstering the self esteem of young girls and serving as a role model to others in special, fun-filled nutritional cooking sessions.”  Currently, Project Sunshine empowers a dynamic and dedicated corps of over 10,000 volunteers to bring programming - recreational (arts), educational (tutoring and mentoring) and social service (HIV and nutritional counseling) - to over 60,000 children facing medical challenges and their families in 150 major cities across the United States and in five international satellite sites: Canada, China, Israel, Kenya and Puerto Rico.

Cohen Children's Medical Center President & CEO Michael Dowling and Kevin McGeachy, executive director of CCMC, too joined Miss Universe 2011 Leila Lopes during the event. Leila also shared personal souveniers and autographs with the kids, all in an lovely effort to spread a little sunshine in these ailing kids' life.
