There is no doubt that everyone remembers the Chernobyl incident. Even decades after the tragic event happened, Ukraine is still cleaning up the toxic and radioactive traces of one of the worlds most disastrous environmental tragedy. To represent Ukraine at Miss Earth 2008 is Olga Bilousova and as a Ukrainian she knows what are the ill effects of human carelessness to the environment.

Please describe yourself briefly.
First of all, I study in Linguistic University in Kiev as French interpreter. I can say that I’m a person, who is interested in art. That’s why I take part in international vocal contests and often win. Spending much time on my occupations, I improve different kinds of personal abilities. Also, it’s impossible to imagine my life without traveling, because it’s a good chance to learn something interesting and new about our world..
What is the most urgent environmental problem in your country right now and what do you think is the solution?
In my opinion first of all Ukraine suffers from the biggest ecological catastrophe of the Nuclear Power Station, that blasted in 1986 in the city Chernobyl, not far from the capital. Further explosions and the resulting fire sent a plume of highly radioactive fallout into the atmosphere and over an extensive geographical area. Another big problem is air, water and soil pollution, which is caused by factories and people. The only solution is to unite our human forces for common goal – to make our Earth clean.
What environmental activities are you currently engaged in?
As for me, I help to plant trees. If everyone takes care even of one tree, the air will be much cleaner and it will be easier to breathe.
Does it take a beautiful woman to remind all of us the need to preserve the resources of Mother Earth.
I think that the beauty of young woman is a symbol of the beauty of our nature, which needs to be young every time. Woman is so delicate, so unprotected like Mother Earth. Earth is like a real loving mother, which suffers from her own children. She protects us and we must be thankful and safe her eternal beauty.
What do you hope to see in Manila, Guam and Bali - hosts to Miss Earth 2008?
I hope to see how people live there, what are their traditions and of course to enjoy the nature.

The only abnormality is the incapacity to love. So let’s love each other and our nature! All men are in some degree impressed by the face of the world; some are even delighted. This love of beauty is taste. Others have the same love in such success that, not content with admiring, they seek to embody it in new forms. The creation of beauty is art.
