First Impressions

Make way for Hollywood's season of celebrating beauty. The situation in Los Angeles is intense as the most beautiful delegates for the Miss Universe pageant are in full swing. Compared to the previous editions of Miss Universe, this year's batch is definitely the finest and the organizers are very vocal about it. We assume that contestants from countries repeatedly making it to the semifinal lineup will be having a hard time against the competitive representatives of less recognized countries in the industry. Every continent has its share of spectacular talents and it would be nice to see a diverse Top 20 although it's a given fact that the Latin delegation is set to dominate the finals over again. In Wilshire, you will find people mostly from Latin America and it is very obvious that they are the ones responsible for the pageant's accumulation of viewer-ship, media mileage and sponsorship. Accredited members of the press, photographers, fans and TV crews swamp the whole stretch of Wilshire Grand Hotel's entrance hall and lobby to witness the girls vying for the crown and to also interview some of them. In a flurry of events which include a kick-off party held at the house of Tadashi, filming & photo shoots, cocktail parties, visit to Universal Studios and many other press events, a total of 86 contestants showed up in their honor and it was at this point where Missosology's Miss Universe correspondents have managed to evaluate each delegate based on her impact and "first impression."

"A first impression is the most important impression a candidate will ever make- and she only gets one chance. We now acquaint you with our initial honest to goodness review on each delegate."

Australia India Philippines Sri Lanka

Asia & Oceania

AUSTRALIA, Erin McNaught - After being involved in a scandal (posing topless for a men's magazine), Erin has gotten a "Trump Card" up her sleeve. It is not difficult to see how this Aussie gal escaped rejection from the organizers. Her foxy charms and inviting smile make her one of the top favorites for the crown. Her likeness to Miss Universe 2004 Jennifer Hawkins would also help her get there.

INDIA, Neha Kapur - Here comes a very strong contender froom Asia! Comfortable with herself, fun and definitely not your conventional beauty queen, Neha knows how to convey her confidence and it is very obvious that she does modeling by profession in her native land. Take note that past Indian beauties that did so well in Miss Universe were also professional models. We told Neha how we liked her clothes and she said to us, "I like my wardrobe a lot. Before leaving the country, some designer-friends handed them over to me."

PHILIPPINES, Lia Andrea Ramos - This time, they liked Miss Philippines, who besides being well groomed, was beautifully tanned, educated, sweet and very classy. She is a more animated version of Miss Universe 2000 Lara Dutta.

SRI LANKA, Jacqueline Fernandez - Jacqueline is one of the knockouts in every event. She promises to go beyond beauty and focus on her intellect and distinctiveness. "Heart makes the difference between the most beautiful and competitive delegates around the world. It boils down to who has the bigger heart."

JAPAN, Kurara Chibana - Kurara gave the pageant something resembling a shred of buzz. Unlike most of the girls around her, she was quirky, insightful and unique. She's glaring with attractive looks and pizzazz.

INDONESIA, Nadine Chandrawinata - Her mixed ancestry, German and Indonessian, is unique. Lots of her co-contestants are in awe of her prettiness. But her packaging is way too conservative.

THAILAND, Charm Osathanond - A pageant observer commented about the innate elegance of this Thai beauty. We found out that Charm comes from an elite family back in her country. It is interesting to note that the Miss Universe pageant has a number of important sponsors from Thailand so it may work to Charm's advantage.

LEBANON, Gabrielle Bou Rached - A startling fact about Gabby is that she is very articulate in English. But she has to get out there because we hardly ever see her around.

NEW ZEALAND, Elizabeth Gray - She always looked calm and relaxed. This blonde beauty is easy on the eyes. She has a slight resemblance to Russia's tennis heartthrob Anna Kournikova.

NORTHERN MARIANAS, Shequitta Bennett - With her chocolate-colored skin, when people first saw her, one can hardly tell that she is from Northern Marianas but somewhere in Africa. A very pretty girl!

CHINA, Ying Hui Gao - Among the Asian girls, Miss China enjoys the fanaticism of her Chinese fellowmen who are settled at the bustling Chinatown area here in LA.

Promising beauties from Asia that still need to make a splash are Miss Korea Joo Hee Kim (very cute), Miss Egypt Fawzia Mohammed, Miss Israel Anastacia Entin, Miss Malaysia Melissa Ann Tan, Miss Kazakhstan Dina Nuraliyeva and Miss Singapore Carol Cheong.

Puerto Rico Trinidad & Tobago Dominican Republic St. Lucia

The Caribbean

PUERTO RICO, Zuleyka Rivera - Make no mistake about her. We found Zuleyka to be the best overall. Her fans are not just the ones that go crazy every time she makes an appearance, almost everyone is being taken away by this exciting 18-year-old stunner. Take into account Puerto Rico's Miss Universe trend: Their bet Alba Reyes placed 2nd runner-up in 2004 while Cynthia Olavarria ended up as 1st runner-up to Natalie Glebova last year. It's very, very possible for Puerto Ricans to achieve their fifth Miss Universe crown this year!

TRINIDAD & TOBAGO, Kenisha Thom - She has an attention-grabbing exotic beauty and grace. A bright woman, she never gets overshadowed in the competition.

DOMINICAN REPUBLIC, Mia Taveras - The ever-smiling Mia has earned praise from everyone. Her cool personality is her major asset to make it to the finals. A hot contestant!

ST. LUCIA, Sascha Andrew-Rose - Here's a statuesque beauty who does it best. With her beautiful dusky looks, refinement and the so-called X-factor, Sascha just got what it takes to make the cut.

JAMAICA, Cindy Wright - What's even more impressive than Cindy's natural beauty and stature is the sexy vibe she exudes. Also a strong contender for the Top 15.

CAYMAN ISLANDS, Ambuyah Ebanks - A feisty & well-prepared Island girl who's always ready for action.

ARUBA, Melissa Lacle - She may not be the prettiest out of the bunch but she always appears well-dressed. No one can knock her out in this area.

ANTIGUA & BARBUA, Shari McEwan - Her sky-blue floral suit was amazing and she did look interesting during her arrival.

Miss Mauritius Isabelle Antoo, Miss St. Vincent & the Grenadines Shivern Peters and Miss Bahamas Samantha Carter are terrific and focused candidates. Miss St. Martin Gisella Hilliman, Miss Turks & Caicos Shaveena Been and Miss US Virgin Islands eTaime Cerge are beauties that seem to be lacking something yet they cannot be underestimated.
