Lauriane Gilliéron: Missosology's Beauty Talks

After successfully venturing in dance sport, Lauriane decided to take the plunge into the beauty pageant world. While pageant hecklers are fussing over the superficiality of many beauty contestants today, this vegetarian is here to prove that she has the ultimate ingredients to be pigeonholed as a perfectly natural and likeable Miss Universe delegate.

• What would your friends say to describe you?
My friends would say that I am a sensitive person, very supportive to others and sociable. I have much facility to communicate with my circle of family and friends. They would also describe me as very ambitious and willful.

• Tell something about your childhood dream.
My dream as a child was not to become a princess like those in fairytales but to be a teacher like my mother. I used to admire this kind of profession because it upholds children's education in order to help them build a future. That for me is something admirable.

• Can you share to us your beauty secret?
Stay happy!

• What is your favorite part of your body & why?
My eyes because it has a little bit of a squint which gives a particular deep look.

• What's inside your bag right now?
My wallet and inside it are pictures of people I like very much. Also my cellphone, my keys, perfume, a bit of make-up and small lucky charms.

• How would you define "beauty?"
It's very difficult to describe it considering that it is very subjective. I would simply say that beauty is important but not the most important.

• What were your reasons for joining the Miss Switzerland 2005 pageant?
I was very curious to discover a world that so many girls dream of. Being very feminine, I often ask myself how I would fare in a beauty contest. I've already had the opportunity to represent my country as Latin American dancer. The idea of having the possibility to represent Switzerland again in another field was an excellent idea for me.

• How were you elected as Miss Switzerland? Describe the judging process.
The jury conducted an interview with each of the 16 candidates before the show. During the live broadcast of the pageant, a jury consisted of 6 celebrities assessed us for appearance in swimsuits, evening dress and casual attire. The three finalists had to answer questions from the jury and then the Swiss TV audience gets to choose the Miss Switzerland Universe out of the 3 finalists through telephone and SMS voting.

• What do you think are your qualities that helped you earn the judges' approval & the crown?
I think the judges appreciated my elegance, my naturalness and sincere smile. At the time of the interview preceding the election, I think they figured out that I was very motivated and able to carry the role of an ambassador.

• Tell us about your preparations for the Miss Universe contest. In what areas will you try to improve on after your Miss World stint?
I will simply stay natural and won't change my character. I will make the most out of all the beautiful experiences that will come my way.

• Can you tell something that is so interesting or unique about you?
I was a vice Swiss champion of Latin American Dance in 2002 and 2003. It has enabled myself to represent my country in multiple competitions all over the world.

• Any beauty queen/s that you really admire? Why?
I could not name one in particular but I admire every beauty queen who have taken advantage of their popularity in order to help the people in need.

• Describe your fashion sense and style.
I do like elegance. I think that in order to be beautiful, a woman must have class.

• How will you describe your country to your co-candidates at Miss Universe?
Switzerland is a beautiful country that has great diversity. You can admire our mountains, lakes, the countryside and forests. It is a reliable and rich country which provides its inhabitants with good quality of life.

• You were a top favorite during the Miss World 2005 pageant in Sanya, China. What was your most unforgettable Miss World experience?

One unforgettable moment of the competition happened during the first day when I arrived. Discovering all these girls coming from all over the world with totally different cultures and lifestyles was very impressive.

• Supposed there is a Genie who happens to be mad at you for a wrong deed committed and his punishment is to turn you into an animal for a year. You can't plead to alter his decision but you get to decide what type of animal, you would become, what creature would you choose and why?
I would choose to be a dolphin because they are not just very intelligent and sensitive but are also able to help people through certain therapies.

• If it were your last day on earth, what would you eat & why?
Since I usually pay attention to what I eat in order to stay fit, I would eat foodstuff such as pizzas, pasta, chips and french fries and chocolates galore!!!

• Do you have a motto or personal quote that you live by?
Don't judge a book by its cover.

• Aside from winning your title, what's the best thing that has ever happened to you?
The best thing is to have gotten my high school diploma. Today, it's very important to have good qualifications in order to feel assured of the future.

• Do you think winning a beauty pageant is really important? Tell us about your responsibilities as Miss Switzerland titleholder.
The title of Miss Switzerland itself is not important but if we use it to spread happiness from one place to another, then I would say yes- it's important.

• What should pageant experts, your fellowmen, fans and beauty watchers expect from Miss Switzerland at Miss Universe 2006 pageant?
I would be very happy to live an unforgettable experience, to meet a lot of people, to travel and offer a smile to the world.
