Photos land Miss Australia in hot water
A model named Miss Universe Australia two weeks ago may lose her crown after calls for her to be stripped of the title because of a topless photo shoot. Furious officials yesterday said Erin McNaught was not fit to wear the crown after topless pictures of her were published in men's magazine Zoo Weekly. The 24-year-old, who is studying for a science degree at the Queensland University of Technology, posed for the photos before she was crowned this month. Hoping to follow in the footsteps of Australian Jennifer Hawkins, Ms McNaught is overseas having dress fittings for the international beauty pageant. But one of the competition's judges, Jonathan
Westbrook of Perth, wants her stripped of the title and says judges were unaware she had posed for the pictures.
He said Ms McNaught was not fit to hold the title and accused her of
dragging the contest into the gutter.
"She is not the sort of wholesome role model we are looking for," he said. But pageant director and licensee Jim Davie believes
Miss McNaught has done nothing wrong. Mr. Davie did not return calls
but left a message on Mr. Westbrook's voicemail saying that regardless of the photos,
Miss McNaught would represent Australia at the international competition, to be judged in Los Angeles on July 23. "I can assure you that it's my decision and she's going. She's done nothing, in my view, that is beyond her representing us. Erin was overseas preparing for the Miss Universe final and
have
had
a dress fitting for the event. "She's fine. The contracts have been signed, it's all done and

Miss South Africa, Nokuthula Sithole, who will be jetting off to Los Angeles on July 4 for the Miss Universe pageant, believes that her advantage over other contenders is that she is an African woman.
Her pride in her heritage comes across in the national gift she has hand-crafted for the pageant. She created a sculpture of a nude woman in the "get-ready" position. According to Sithole, the sculpture symbolises African women, who have had to endure a lot of hardship. Each contestant will present a gift, which is auctioned off before the night of the pageant. All the money collected for the gifts will be given to charity. Sithole is the first Shangaan woman to take part in the Miss Universe pageant and to pay tribute to her culture,
she will be wearing a Shangaan-inspired dress designed by Sun Goddess. Thuli, as she is known, will also wear a red ballgown, which she describes as "glamorous" and "elegant". The 22-year-old town and regional planning student at Wits University will also take part in the Miss World pageant in September.

Egypt's
Fawzeya Mohamed
Fawzeya Mohamed is one of the few girls who have grown up to live her dream when she was crowned Miss Egypt.
"I think she has typical Egyptian looks and she is quite confident. Her look may not be appreciated here but the judges really liked her – she will be highly approved of
abroad," says Youssef Spahi, founder of the Face to Face agency that created the Miss Egypt competition. Fawzeya has worked as a model for the past year. She has modeled for many prominent Egyptian designers specializing in catwalks. She has two aims in the upcoming Miss Universe 2006 pageant, taking place in Los Angeles. First, to get a high score, and secondly

Latin Beauties enjoy favoritism of
some
members of MUO
May is supposed to be the month in which beauty ambassadors from different parts of the globe come together to compete for one
'sought
after' crown, but in 2006 the Miss Universe pageant was postponed for the month of July. The city of Los Angeles was chosen as the official headquarters for the 56th edition of the contest. The organization is expecting the participation of 90 delegates that will compete for 15 semifinal slots and the opportunity to inherit the crown
currently
worn by Natalie Glebova of Canada.
Meanwhile, the delegates of Dominican Republic, Puerto Rico, Mexico, Colombia and Venezuela enjoy the favoritism of some members of the Miss Universe Organization.
"It
won't be a surprise if one of these girls will figure in the top 5 this
year," commented a representative from Telemundo.
"Besides having very good relationships with MUO, Los Angeles as the center of
its
operations guarantees that the crown will be passed to a Latin American
contestant." Mia Taveras (Dominican Republic), Valerie Domínguez (Colombia) and Zuleyka Rivera (Puerto Rico) visited New York, May 16-18, 2005 and appeared in various TV programs. They met up with the executives of the Miss Universe Organization and were presented to the media.
On a back-to-back victory for Canada, a pageant expert stated that despite the fact that Alice Panikian possesses all the attributes to be crowned, MUO is not keen on awarding the title to a country for two consecutive years.
"They're more into business and the image of the girls. Canada is the favorite delegate to capture the crown, however, it is impossible for them to duplicate their previous
win." But the organization commented,
"that if Canada is the best, then she has all the rights to win though nothing can be said until the time of the
finals."
"Expect lots of entertainment, color, music and excitement in the upcoming Miss Universe
pageant," representatives of Telemundo commented. It will be an all-out international celebration that will be held in Los Angeles- a city raised by immigrants. Stars such as Thalía, Shakira and Luis Fonsi might serve as special guests during the grand event. Miss Universe 2006 will be held at the Shrine Auditorium in Los Angeles, Sunday July 23rd. The tickets will be available by mid-June.

Talk
This year, over eighty beauties from every continent will vie for the Miss Universe 2006 crown in July. The Shrine Auditorium in Los Angeles, California, will set the stage for this exciting and historical event. Last year, there were a total of 81 Miss Universe delegates who competed in Bangkok, Thailand. So far, 74 beauties have been elected by their respective nations as official beauty ambassadors for this
year's
prestigious global event. However, some of them are faced with problems concerning their requirements in accordance with the Miss Universe
pageant's rules of the competition. The candidates with questionable qualifications in terms of citizenship, age, among others are
Angola's Stiviandra Oliveira,
Germany's Natalie Ackermann and
Poland's Francys Sudnicka. Let's keep our fingers crossed that
these three spectacular early-favorites would resolve their issues. The participation of Miss Belgium Virginie Claes, Miss Ghana Angela Asare, Miss Iraq Silvia Shahakian & Miss Portugal Marina Rodrigues is not yet confirmed. Yael Nizri who was the original
bet of Israel to Miss Universe will be sent to Miss World 2006 in Warsaw, Poland. Her 1st runner-up Anastasya Yentin is now the official Israeli representative to Miss Universe. Still to come are Miss Universe delegates from Australia, Belize, Botswana, Chile, Curacao, Denmark, Georgia, Italy, Kenya, the Netherlands, United Kingdom and Vietnam. Check out Miss Universe
