With the Miss Carival crown to her credit, Shivern isn't a newcomer to the world of pageantry and can be considered as one tough cookie at this juncture. Her being well-opinionated & smart plus her aura of strength aren't the only attractive facet of her personality, everyone who meets her would tell her that she's a natural dramatist.
•
What would your friends say to describe you?
My friends always say that
I'm a fun-loving and down to earth person with a great passion for life.
•
Tell something about your childhood dream.
My childhood dream was and still is to become a successful Mechanical or Electrical Engineer. I am currently awaiting a response from the Limkokwing University of Malaysia where I hope to study Information Technology. I will then do a postgraduate degree in the engineering field.
•
Can you share to us your beauty secret?
There is nothing like a warm smile to bring out the beauty within, no make-up on this earth can do what a smile can.
•
What is your favorite part of your body & why?
This is a question that deserves a totally honest answer from me so I will have to say my derriere. I was once told by a photographer that for such a petite person, I am quite
"bootylicious."
•
What's inside your bag right now?
In my bag right now I have my face powder, lip liner and lip-gloss, my cell phone which I cannot live without, my ID card and my wallet.
•
How
would
you
define
"beauty?"
To me beauty is more about the way a person feels about herself or himself than what they look like on the outside. I have noticed that there are people who are not traditionally beautiful but their personality outshines everything else and they appear to have a natural glow and that people always want to be around them. To me this kind of person is truly beautiful.
•
What
were
your reasons for joining
the
Miss
St. Vincent & the Grenadines
pageant?
I was a tomboy growing up, but my family and friends always thought I would do well on stage and in pageants. They encouraged me to enter community beauty pageants and when I did, I simply fell in love with the stage. After that, when I saw the advertisement for the Miss Saint Vincent and the Grenadines Pageant it just seemed natural for me to apply and take part.
•
How were you elected as
Miss
St. Vincent & the Grenadines
Universe? Describe the judging process.
Winning the Miss SVG Pageant entitled me to represent my country in Miss Carival, a regional pageant in which I also won. I won in three of the four categories in that competition (talent, swimwear and evening gown) and the local franchise holders decided to select me to represent St. Vincent and the Grenadines at the Miss Universe Pageant.
•
What do you think are your qualities that helped you earn the
judges' approval & the crown?
I would have to say my love of it all. I thoroughly enjoyed myself on stage and I think I came across as well prepared but thoroughly relaxed. I really had a good time on stage on the nights of Miss SVG and Miss Carival. I just approached it as I do life - ready to confidently take on any challenge that comes my way.
•
Tell us about your preparations for the Miss Universe contest.
I must say I am very busy- working out at the gym, consulting with my chaperone and the organizing committee to fine tune my wardrobe, continuing my training in several areas and attending functions held by the Government and private organizations. And of course, I try to stay calm and not be too excited.
•
Can you tell something that is so interesting or unique about you?
I am freakishly good at imitating people and everyone who meets me would tell me that I am a natural dramatist.
•
Any beauty queen/s that you really admire? Why?
The first black Miss Universe, Janelle
"Penny" Commissiong, and Wendy Fitzwilliam. They have grace, beauty, intelligence and a zest for life that personal tragedies and setbacks have not been able to diminish. All these things make them great examples for women of all ages. They have also both continued to have vibrant lives after being beauty queens and the fact that they are both West Indian makes it all the more thrilling for me.
•
Describe your fashion sense and style.
I have no sense of fashion and I know nothing at all about the latest fashion trends. I am a
"jeans to go
everywhere" kind of person. My designer and chaperone Alex Grant will choose every outfit that I will wear at Miss Universe. Believe me, it is much better this way, otherwise I would be in jeans every day!
•
How
will you describe your country to your co-candidates at Miss Universe?
St. Vincent & the Grenadines is an un-spoilt destination with many natural wonders. For example, my island Bequia though tiny is a tropical paradise and the waters of the Grenadines are said to be the best in the world for diving. The people are friendly and the food is amazing. If you ever come to visit- it will become your home away from home.
•
What is your opinion on
activists' point of view that exposure of too much skin in the swimsuit competition disrespects women?
I would say to those activists that how much skin a woman shows has very little to do with whether she is respected or not. A woman should be seen as much more than a function of beauty. She should be respected for the quality of her intellect which does not depend on whether she is a beauty queen in a bikini or a female CEO of a Fortune 500 company in a business suit.
•
Supposed there is a Genie who happens to be mad at you for a wrong deed committed and his punishment is to turn you into an animal for a year. You can't plead to alter his decision but you get to decide what type of animal you would become, what creature would you choose and why?
I would choose to be an American Eagle for it stands tall and proud and there is something awe inspiring about its majesty. More importantly, there are so many organizations dedicated to its protection and preservation. I know I would have a very good chance of living a long life.
•
If it were your last day on earth, what would you eat & why?
I would eat Kentucky Fried Chicken because I love it and right now it has been banned from the foods that I am allowed to eat. If it were my last day on earth, I would really like to taste it just one more time.
•
Do you have a motto or personal quote that you live by?
Live life on your terms and never let this life live your life for you.
•
Aside from winning your title,
what's the best thing that has ever happened to you?
Aside from winning the right to represent St. Vincent and the Grenadines at Miss Universe, the best thing that has ever happened to me has been the opportunity to go to a country like Malaysia to study. I will be far away from home but it's not everyday that you have the opportunity to earn a degree, become fluent in another language and live and learn another culture and way of life.
•
Do you think winning a beauty pageant is really important? Tell us about your responsibilities as
Miss
St. Vincent & the Grenadines
titleholder.
Winning a beauty pageant can never be as important as understanding the huge responsibilities that go along with it. During my reign as Miss St. Vincent & the Grenadines, I have attended many official functions and also visited the House of
Hope, an organization for persons with HIV/AIDS, to speak with participants about their everyday struggle with the disease and to bring awareness to the wider society. Additionally, I also take time to visit the pediatric ward of the local hospital simply reading to and spending time with children.
•
Why do you want do be crowned Miss Universe and how would you define the title in your own terms?
Other than for the obvious selfish reasons, I would want to be crowned Miss Universe because I would like the people of the world to know that small countries such as mine can compete on the world stage. I would define the title in my own terms by bringing more awareness to the plight of persons with HIV/AIDS in the developing world especially the West Indies; it is a serious problem that can never have too much attention.
•
What should pageant experts, your fellowmen, fans and beauty watchers expect from Miss
St. Vincent & the Grenadines
at Miss Universe 2006 pageant?
Everyone can expect me to do my country and my region proud.
•
Finally, leave a message for your fans, supporters and the readers of Missosology.
I would like all my fans, supporters and to the readers of Missosology to know that I will represent St. Vincent and the Grenadines to the best of my ability and I plan to take pleasure in each and every moment of this marvelous experience. I would also like to thank the Government and people of St. Vincent and the Grenadines for their support. I hope everyone enjoys the show and that you all shout and jump up and down for me when I make my first appearance on the Shrine Auditorium stage on 23rd July,
2006!
