Miss Kentucky, a business administration student who says pop stars may be getting too edgy for young people who see them as role models, now has a chance to be a role model herself — as the new Miss USA. Tara Elizabeth Conner, 20, of Russell Springs, was crowned Miss USA on Friday night, April 21st, 2006 by Chelsea Cooley of North Carolina, Miss USA 2005. It was the 55th annual pageant. She will compete July 23 in the Miss Universe competition in Los Angeles. "The stars were in my favor tonight," she said. "I can't wait to see how far this year can take
me.
This is the biggest thing that has ever happened in my town," she said. Interview on CBS

Harry
Smith:
Now just last week we had all of the Miss USA contestants out here,
it
was
freezing
cold
and you're in the middle of competition. Take me to the night when you found out, when
you heard your voice
named as the new Miss USA.
Tara: It was funny, because I honestly thought they called me
for first runner-up. For a split second, I was like - oh, wow, I did so well, I'm so happy. But
then I realized they called me, and I shook my head, I was like there's no way. But it was
awesome, it felt- it was great.
Harry:
We
actually have some
of
your Kentucky neighbors here with you. When you were a little
girl growing up in Kentucky, did you ever dream in your wildest dreams that you would actually
achieve this?
Tara: It was my wildest dream, and ever since I was probably around 13 I've been watching
TV, seeing the Miss USAs and thinking that's what I want to do one of these days. I want to be
that girl. So I've worked hard for it, and her I am.
Harry: See, that - and it can happen to anybody, I
guess,
right?
Congratulations to you.
Tara: Thank you so much.
