At 19, she already radiates the innate aura of
a queen. She may not have
been born to royals but she definitely has the air of one. First in Missosology's "Beauty Talks" segment is 5'9" tall Denia Nixon, the
bewitching Bahamian representative to the upcoming Miss Universe 2005
pageant. Denia talks about her role as Miss Bahamas and the two other
beauty-titles that she also earned this year.
•
What three words best describe you? Why?
Spontaneous, Adaptable and bubbly. Spontaneous- because I can react &
operate naturally. Adaptable- because it's a quality I exercise most
as a reigning queen and in my past beauty titles. Bubbly- because I
am often told this by others I come in contact with.
• What was your childhood dream?
My childhood dream was to always get the praise of my daddy and
continuously hear the words "Daddy's girl". Through all my
accomplishments, my father was one of my greatest fans. He believed in
me every step of the way - yes I am a proud "Daddy's girl". (smiles)
•
What factors attracted you to join a beauty contest? Why did you
decide to join the Miss Bahamas pageant?
The factor that attracted me the most was that I saw myself in
reigning queens- their finesse, beauty, poise and willingness to
serve. It was like having a sense of belongingness in a family and all
I had to do was to have a willing heart to be a member of that family.
•
What is your impression on beauty contests prior to participating in
one?
My impression about beauty contests before was that "just like its
delegates, I believe that it can also become an avenue where I
can showcase my beauty- internally and externally." It was something that I was eager to display."
•
How were you judged as a contestant of Miss Bahamas Universe?
Describe the judging process.
We were judged on our poise, charm, body contour, overall
attractiveness of a beauty queen and intellect. First, there was a
private interview with judges, followed by a "Spokes Model"
competition with intellect and prior achievements as the primary
focuses and for the finals we were heavily judged on facial beauty,
poise, charm and swimsuit.
• What do you think are your qualities that made you win the Miss
Bahamas Universe title? It was a tough competition. All of the
delegates were multi-talented, so I think it came down to the final
question which was selected from a pool of audiences' questions. You
can either give a good or poor answer, but luckily, it fell in my
favor...
•
Is winning a beauty pageant important? What are your responsibilities
as Miss Bahamas?
I think it is. The level of exposure, respect and public support that
you receive as a beauty queen will help you propel to another level in
your life. There are only few females blessed beyond measures to be
chosen or crowned as her country's beauty queen. My role as Miss
Bahamas is to serve as an official Ambassador for my country within
the Bahamas Government. I became a part of the Ministry of Tourism in
promoting our number one industry- Tourism.
•
What is your opinion on activists' point of view that exposure of too
much skin in the swimsuit competition disrespects women?
I believe that modeling in swimsuits, shows how we as women respect
ourselves by keeping our bodies fit, healthy and in tone. No one can
argue that almost every female desires a firm, fit and healthy figure.
Anything that is good should be promoted and keeping one self in a
healthy state is a good thing to showcase.
•
What are your passions in life?
I enjoy the water. Many refer to it as the fountain of youth. I
enjoy para-sailing, scuba diving, yoga, modeling and working out in
the gym. I look forward to having a career as an Hotelier.
•
Can you tell something that is so interesting about you?
I am the reigning queen of three beauty/modeling titles, namely, Miss
Teen Model Bahamas, Miss Marathon Constituency and now Miss Bahamas
Universe. I will end my reign in the other titles later this year.
•
How are you preparing yourself for the Miss Universe beauty pageant?
Boy, I have five days a week of complete physical work out, three days
a week of etiquette and speech classes and numerous functions to
attend for practice on personal deportment of a beauty queen.
•
How will you describe your country to your co-candidates at Miss
Universe?
My country is made up of many islands that are unique. It offers
satisfaction for the most discriminating taste. Here, it is assured to
find something to do, eat, wear or some place to go with such great
variety that would please you immensely.
•
What is the craziest thing you have ever done?
Fall in Love on first sight! Crazy but true... (smiles)
•
How would you define "love"?
Love is a feeling of well being, it is having a sense of joy that is not
selfish, but must be shared by another to experience its fullness.
•
Do you have a motto or personal quote that you live by?
My favorite quote is "If I can help somebody as I journey along, then
my living would have not been in vain."
•
What is your biggest dream in life?
My biggest live dream in life is to be able to give enough love
everywhere I go so that I can be remembered as a person who gave the
world, more than what she got.

Thank you
Denia. Do your best in your Miss Universe quest! Good Luck!
