Forget about the accent, Brooke Johnston has managed to flawlessly transition from being a former Miss Canada to being Miss United Kingdom at this
year's Miss Universe. She once again proves that beauty & intelligence can go hand in hand. What one must know about Brooke is in store here.
•
What three words best describe you & why?
Spontaneous- because I am outgoing and I like experiencing the world. Compassionate- since I care about people. Intelligent- because I value education and lifelong learning.
• What was your childhood dream?
As a little girl, I wanted to be the young lady on a parade float waving to the crowds. It
had actually come true!
•
What factors attracted you to join a beauty contest?
I was interested in the opportunity to travel and learn about new cultures. I have visited Thailand before and it feels great to be back. I also enjoy the opportunity to meet and become friends with interesting young women from around the world.
•
What is your impression on beauty contests prior to participating in
one?
I was aware of the stereotype that pageants are exploitive and only focus on vanity and physical appearances. In my experience, I have been well treated in pageants and I have met many talented and capable young women who became my friends.

It is interesting to note that you represented Canada at the Miss Earth 2003 pageant. You surprised many pageant followers the moment you appeared at the official Miss Universe website as UK’s bet.
I was born in Canada and represented Canada in Miss Earth 2003. I hold dual citizenship because both my parents were born in the UK. I hold a British passport and have lived and worked in London this past year and will reside
there permanently. I can vote and enjoy all the privileges of British citizenship. I
am now trying to represent the UK to the best of my ability.
• What do you think are your qualities that
helped you win the Miss United Kingdom Universe 2005 title?
The qualities that I have, to name a few are good health and fitness. The ability to think and speak on issues, good appearance, poise and previous pageant experience helped me gain the title.
•
After the Miss Earth 2003 pageant, we found out that
you stayed in the Philippines for 2 more years.
Tell us how you fell in love with the country.
I have wonderful memories of the Philippines. It is a beautiful country and in the Miss Earth Pageant, we had the opportunity to travel extensively. I was most impressed by the warmth and generosity of the people. I also appreciated the environmental focus of the pageant. One life experience that I will never forget is when I was invited to help release a sea turtle back into the wild.
•
What is your most prized material possession?
A string of pearls that my parents gave me when I graduated from university. I will wear them all my life and give them to my daughter.
•
You are still very young and learning... but what do you think is the best lesson life has ever taught you?
The importance of family.
•
What is your opinion on activists' point of view that exposure of too
much skin in the swimsuit competition disrespects women?
I think the bathing suit competition connotes fitness. The bathing suits are tasteful and could be seen on any public beach.
•
If you were the President of your country and right before you is a bill passed by Congress allowing Human Cloning as a legal procedure in the country, would you sign the bill or refuse the whole thing?
Cloning of animals may be necessary for medical research, however human cloning has serious scientific and ethical concerns. I would not support human cloning. Scientific resources should be used to deal with hunger, poverty and disease in our world.

What are your passions in life?
My passions in life include the study of ancient history, music, travel and friends and family.
