Miss World 2008 News
And the winner is…Russia!
Australians who are hooked on TV rather than on internet knew the results 12 hours after the pageant was concluded after networks from ABC to Seven decided to highlight the event. Ksenia Sukhinova, as predicted by Missosology, bagged the 2008 Miss World crown. Earlier, she won the Top Model award hinting that she will be the eventual winner. Politics was set aside as the pageant was originally scheduled in Ukraine but was cancelled due to the Russo-Georgian conflict. Russia and Ukraine both made it to the final cut but not Georgia.
The visibly disappointed Miss India Parvathy Onammakutan finished as first runner-up while Miss Trinidad and Tobago Gabrielle Walcott did a superb job and landed as second-runner up. Gabrielle surprised many pundits and proved that the Peter Elias magic still works.
Completing the top five were Miss Angola Brigith dos Santos and host delegate Tansey Coetzee. Both are women of color and was thought that at least one of them will turn up as first runner-up. Just like in 1993 and 1994, remember?
Fast track winners include Miss Mexico Anagabriela Espinoza for Beach Beauty, Sportswoman Miss Iceland Alexandra Ivarsdottir, and talent competition winner Miss Barbados Natalie Griffith. Miss Trinidad and Tobago also bagged the Beauty with a Purpose Award. Miss United States gown wowed the judges and was awarded with a special designer award but did not make it to the semis. The People’s Choice was ditched at the last minute with no official reason given.
Completing the semi-finalists list were Miss Brazil Tamara Almeida, Miss Croatia Josipa Kusic, Miss Kazakhstan Alfina Nassirova, Miss Puerto Rico Ivonne Orsini, Miss Spain Patricia Rodriguez, Miss Ukraine Irina Zhuravskaya and Miss Venezuela Hannelys Quintero. Big disappointments include the exclusions of delegates from the Philippines, Paraguay, Ecuador and Norway. No East Asian made it to the semis as the format this year shifted from what was used to be a regional selection into a truly global contest.
