After a quick tour in Abu Dhabi the Miss World 2009 contestants arrived in the South African city of Johannesburg affectionately called as Jozi. The 113 Miss World contestants carrying small South African flags were loudly greeted by traditional dancers at the Tambo International Airport.
The contestants then had fun in visiting the Rosebank Rooftop Market where throngs of shoppers rushed in to take their photos. Today, the contestants are in Port Elizabeth at the Eastern Cape where the Miss World Sports Final will be held. You can view some of the photos at the gallery The Case of The Missing Luggage (November 15, 2009) Miss New Zealand Magdalena Schoeman encountered a rather bumpy situation when her luggage got lost in Abu Dhabi. According to her National Director Rose Foulger, the staff of the hotel and the Miss World organization acted as if nothing had happened. All the designer clothes of Miss New Zealand was in that luggage. After messaging the forums and beauty pageant related websites, in a plea to pressure the hotel, the luggage was eventually found and is on its way to South Africa. Miss New Zealand was reportely distraught but put a brave face. Missing luggages are not new in Miss World. In 1994, Miss Philippines Caroline Subijano had to endure a humiliating gown called by some observers as "curtains" after her original gown disappeared. She was one of the semifinalists and her bad gown obviously prevented her to advance into the next round. Morley Not Happy With Abu Dhabi Venue for Fashion Show (November 13, 2009)
After a sudden change from chilly London to the repressive heat of Abu Dhabi, the contestants of Miss World 2009 did enjoy a great welcome dinner and had a lovely tour around the emirate. It was planned that yesterday, November 12, a fashion show showcasing South African haute couture will be held. It was reported however that Julia Morley was not happy with the venue such that what is supposed to be a ramp show was turned into a red carpet fashion showcase ala Oscars or Grammys. The delegates did have some fun having a respite from the famed London weather. Many of the delegates took time in basking themselves in the beautiful sunlight. The delegates also toured several places within the emirate including Sheikh Zayed Mosque. Many of the delegates were seen wearing veil as United Arab Emirates, although relatively tolerant and open, is a conservative Islamic nation. After a three day tour in Abu Dhabi, the Miss World 2009 contestants will be heading for South Africa where many special contests including the finals will be held. Miss World 2009 Contestants in Abu Dhabi (November 12, 2009)
The Miss World 2009 delegates flew to Abu Dhabi for a Fashion Show. The photos show the delegates during the welcome party. The Fashion Show will be held tonight. Miss Kenya Fiona Konchella was reportedly denied with a visa for the emirate and will not participate in the event. From the official press release of Miss World comes the following report: The young women are in the country to host a gala dinner with VIP and celebrities and take part in their own fashion showcase featuring the cream of South African fashion at a Golden Reception on Friday. Soaring temperatures were a welcome change to the inclement weather they had in London, and some young women took the opportunity to catch some rays poolside at their stunning hotel overlooking the new Abu Dhabi Grand Prix circuit.
The contestant from Italy was lucky enough to tour the race track as a guest of leading Italian motor design brand Maserati. Italy toured the exclusive Formula One enclosure, visited the pits and met the team behind the desirable Italian cars. She looked on with a visible thrill as the team tested their racing and road cars on the spectacular new circuit. “The noise was deafening when the cars went passed but it was definitely a very exciting experience,’ said Italy. “So many times I have seen racing drivers popping Champagne on the winners’ podium – and now I have seen it with my own eyes. I cannot believe I have walked along a Formula One race track!” Traditional Dance and Costume at Miss World 2009 (November 12, 2009)
It has been a long time since a National Costume has appeared in the runways of Miss World and this year a whole new concept is born. While the other 3 pageants of the Big Four (Miss Universe, Miss Earth and Miss International) had been consistent in giving out the Best in National Costume Award, Miss World 2009 decided to ask the delegates to show off traditional costume and dances. Kim Kotter, the new National Director of Miss World Netherlands reports about Avalon-Chanel Weyzig's costume: This year Miss World asked for a traditional outfit instead of the national costume. For us Dutch people, it’s not that hard. We went to Volendam to get inspired. And we put Avalon in the traditional costume: Volendamse pakje. Yes, with the wooden shoes. You can imagine.. This is not a perfectly fitted or a comfortable shoe. And she even has to dance with them! So we took some dancing traditional dancing lessons of the famous Jan Riesewijk. (alias Mans the actor in “van jonge leu”) And the result will be shown at the traditional dance parade. By the way, the music was live recorded from the accordeon during her lessons! How traditional can it be? And to make it a little bit more traditional.. The traditional dress is the original one which Miss Holland 1975 has worn at Miss World! Wow! We’ll hope it will bring us luck!
Meanwhile, Miss South Africa Tatum Keshwar will be wearing aubergine colored ensemble complete with feathered turban. The costume also features floral prints on the belt area the pattern of which shows off traditional African style. Meanwhile report from New Zealand revealed that Miss World NZ Magdalena Schoeman will be wearing a traditional costume inspired by the feiry red Pohutukawa tree. The tree is endemic to New Zealand. Miss Thailand Pongchanok Konklab on the other hand had been pondering on her tradional dress in this YouTube video.
Betting Houses Show Pattern (November 11, 2009)
After showing up at BBC 1, appearances at WTA and sightseeing around London, some selected delegates will be off to Abu Dhabi for a fashion show. At this moment of time, observers are having their say on the delegates and their sentiments are more or less being reflected on two large betting houses. Paddy Power and Ladbrokes may have different favorite lists but they show a pattern. Based on the the odds that each delegate gets, Paddy Power lists Puerto Rico, Mexico, South Africa, France, the Philippines, India, Slovakia, Croatia, Aruba, Malta and Indonesia as top ten favorites. Ladbrokes on the other hand, shows Puerto Rico, Mexico, France, South Africa, Belgium, Dominican Republic, Croatia, India, Italy and Panama as the top ten favorites. Notice how Puerto Rico and Mexico became the consistent top two! Meanwhile in Missosology.Org's Hot Picks as selected by its Beauty Experts, Mexico is ranked number 1 while Puerto Rico is on the 4th place. This year’s Binibining Pilipinas pageant is actually a redemption for Marie, as it is her second time to join; having landed as one of the semi-finalists on her first try. This time, she was more ready, confident and focused, having recently graduated from college. She also spent the entire year after the 2006 pageant preparing and focusing on the pageant and the crown. Judging by her impressive performance, her preparations paid off as she also won the top two most coveted special titles, the Best in Long Gown and the Miss Photogenic awards. Ann, as she is known to friends, hails from Batangas City. She is a graduate of the De LaSalle University - College of St. Benilde where she took up Tourism, and plans to pursue a career as a flight attendant prior to putting up a restaurant. Her dream of becoming a restaurateur is a spin-off of her penchant for cooking and baking. When not dabbling with pots and pans, Ann likes to travel, watch movies and, every girl’s weakness, shop. Aside from fulfilling her duties and responsibilities as Bb. Pilipinas World, taking part in humanitarian missions to uplift the plight of marginalized Filipinos, and improving the morale of the country’s wounded soldiers, Ann is also training tirelessly and diligently to fulfill her most cherished dream of becoming Ms. World. To achieve this, she is currently taking language courses in Spanish and French, reviewing her Philippine History, Geography, Economics and Arts & Culture. She is also trying to learn as much as she could about South Africa. Her fitness regimen, meanwhile, consists of Pilates and Gym training. She is also taking jazz, hip-hop, ballroom and native (Filipino) dance lessons.
To prepare for the intense media scrutiny that beauty queens are normally subjected to, she is undergoing on-cam training, like hosting and angles, plus hair & make-up lessons since she will have to do her own hair and make-up during the Ms. World pageant. Despite the seemingly daunting task ahead of her, Ann is not one to whine and complain. She actually has a ready smile that she generously bestows on every person she meets. She is constantly thankful for the privilege of being a beauty queen and is more than willing to undergo any challenge to take home the title and be the first Filipina to be crowned Miss World. Dalena said “I chose a blue pearl because they are unique to New Zealand. Each blue pearl is nurtured to become a valuable item of enduring beauty in the same way that each child needs to be nurtured to become a unique and valued human being”. This Eyris blue pearl pendant captures the essence of the Miss World contest, and it epitomizes the ‘beauty with a purpose’ theme. The blue pearl named ‘Ocean’ is surrounded by the hopes and aspirations of disadvantaged children all around the world. This blue pearl pendant I’ve named ‘Children of the Heart’. All proceeds will be donated to the Variety International Children’s Fund and the event hopes to raise $1 million to support surgical, nutritional and educational programmes in Haiti, Palau, Philippines, Ghana and India.
