Binibining Pilipinas 2005 beauties vie for coveted crown

An evening of beauty, talent, pageantry, and glamour is set at the Araneta Coliseum, as twenty-three youthful and alluring female contestants vie for the prestigious crown of the Binibining Pilipinas Beauty Pageant 2005.

To be held on March 19, 2005, the Pageant will feature a fantasy/fairytale-inspired theme and will be hosted by three of today's most popular male celebrities: Richard Gomez, Paolo Bediones, and Raymond Gutierrez.

The official candidates are as follows: Wendy Valdez, 22; Ameurfina Koc, 24; Ricamarie Ann Taylor, 20; April Jean Manago, 23; Allaine Christi Asuncion, 23; 18-year-old FEU student Joanna Rumohr; Carlene Aguilar, 23; HRM Baliwag University student Mary Jane Dela Cruz, 19; Monifer Samonte, 23; Katherine Aban, 22, from La Union province; and Marie May Rosalien Paloma, 24.

The next half of the list is composed of Aulorence Alipoon, 23; Melanie Ediza, a 22-year-old licensed nurse; Joanne Padilla, 23; Gionna Cabrera 23, a graduate of the University of Asia and the Pacific; Kristine Santiago, 19, from Pampanga province; Mari-Flor "Hazel" Perez, 22; Joanna Rafbel Serrano, 23; medical technician Stephanie Florence Magali, 22; Ma. Micaela Isabel Padilla, 21; freelance web writer Precious Lara Quigaman, 23; Cebu-based, UP graduate Lois Montes, 25; and Maricris Franco, 24, of Taguig.

Among them all, only three will be crowned with the prestigious Bb. Pilipinas World, International, and Universe beauty titles, plus a special title of Ms. Tourism to signify the pageant's support of the programs of the Department of Tourism. Together, the winners will be tasked to represent the pageant around the world to promote the message of love, peace, hope and charity.

Now celebrating its 42nd year, the Binibining Pilipinas Beauty Pageant 2005 remains to be the country's most renowned and highly anticipated pageant. This annual event is a continuing project of Binibining Pilipinas Charites, Inc. (BPCI), a non-stock, non-profit organization founded by its chair, Stella Marquez de Araneta. Its aim is to benefit orphans, indigent families, and other less fortunate members of society.

The primary goal of the Binibining Pilipinas Beauty Pageant is to raise funds for the various socio-civic causes supported by BPCI - and to do it in a way that ennobles the Filipino image and consciousness around the world. Through the economic support generated from corporate sponsorships and other benefactors and donors, BPCI has been donating to orphanages, indigent families, and victims of calamities for 42 years now, demonstrating its conviction that real beauty lies in helping the less fortunate members of society.

All of BPCI's earnings go to a string of orphanages in Metro Manila including day care centers in cooperation with the Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD). In the past, it has established skills training and educational workshops for the less privileged, and conducts relief operations whenever fire, flood or other calamities occur, such as during the eruption of Mt. Pinatubo, when Bb. Pilipinas beauties distributed food, medicines, and other basic needs to the victims in Porac, Pampanga. Recently, BPCI also donated the seed fund to the MTV Asisa Aid for the tsunami victims in Asia.

The twenty-three official candidates for this year have been actively doing charity work and promotion campaigns themselves. To support the Department of Tourism, the ladies visited Cebu and helped showcase its varied tourist attractions such as the Magellan's Cross, the Lapu Lapu Shrine, and the Sto. Niño shrine. They also shopped for fabulous finds at Tabuan Market, visited Cebu Capitol where they were welcomed by Governor Gwendolyn Garcia, and presented a talent showcase for GMA 7 Cebu City.

Back at Araneta Center, the Bb. Pilipinas candidates conducted a Charity Day for the children of various day care centers of Quezon City. The kids were entertained by clowns doing magic shows, games, and mascot skits, rode for free at all the Fiesta Carnival rides, enjoyed free snacks, and loot bags to go. Afterwards, they conducted a walking tour in and around Ali Mall, the Farmer's Market and Plaza, and the posh, new Gateway Mall, posing before the establishments and thanking the storeowners who have sponsored this year's Bb. Pilipinas Beauty Pageant.

WHO SHOULD REPRESENT US?
by: beautywatchnyc

The season of national beauty pageants will soon hit the airwaves. Something concrete must be done in a concerted national effort by the organizers to correct the mistakes of the past. In our quest for the next major international titleholder, a breath of fresh concepts, ideas, and innovation are largely due; otherwise if the old criteria of selection were to remain, it will look like the status quo of failure is right here to stay.

In the macro point of view, the annual competition (i.e. Ms U) has become every inch tougher with the quality of participating representatives improving after each year. The over-all number of beauty delegates has increased through the years and with that the chances for a finalist slot by an aspiring national representative has subsequently diminished. In an effort to grab the limelight, countries that have had no prior history of winning but are keen on acing the first chance have started to fine-tune their national search methodologies. In many countries these measures have paid off handsomely and resulted to a choice of better looking delegate each year as compared to the titleholder of the preceding year. Be that as it may, even traditional beauty superpowers like India or Venezuela or Puerto Rico or even Colombia have not ceased in their effort to improve, or otherwise employ other sustainable means that guarantee surefire results.

In the case of the Philippines, the traditional beauty queen approach, the core criterion in selecting a national representative to her international competition is deemed no longer effective. Given this extenuating circumstance, it becomes imperative that realistic responsive changes in the national selection process will have to be put in place. While the competing national organizations in other countries have drastically redefined their selection criteria, each had seen to it that the stated objectives were juxtaposed accordingly, in line with the mission statement, say, of the Ms U organization (or Ms World), for that matter.

For instance, a national beauty titleholder deemed to be a potentially effective presenter, or promoter, or endorser of MU objectives (in exceptional circumstances regardless of language skills) may have more chances at reaching the semifinal slot than, say, just a typical run-of-the-mill beauty queen material in the making. It goes without saying, MU and MW, even MI and ME though founded in the premise of beauty competition, are primarily profit-centered business entities. Each of these organizations has to have a host of sponsors to stay operational, cover cost over-runs etc, etc, generate plus revenues to remain afloat, and achieve set targets of profitability and for growth. A national beauty aspirant that lacks the pre-requisite attributes and capability to help promote and attain these business objectives will have no place in the roster of winners in her country’s beauty contest organization.

Homegrown beauty queen personalities with the inclination to win abound in the Philippines. There are those born and raised in other lands either of Filipino descent or inter-racial lineage. Some of these girls are gifted to hug center stage but many have gone on to other levels of pursuit that have a promise of long-term benefits for self-actualization. Why? Because more than the crown itself, it would take more than just prize considerations (in real values!) to attract these advantaged ladies to join the national search.

A package of incentives must be put in place by the organizers to sustain these prospective entrants’ interest and enthusiasm in local beauty pageants. That even after the euphoria of winning has subsided, there remains that extra “magic” for the national winner to latch her title into. There must be something more for the winner in lieu of a year of reign where other opportunities are given up in order to pursue the ideals and reasons of her crown. What does a beauty queen have after her year of reign is over? Practically nothing! Her youth and looks are nothing but ephemeral and that momentary gust of fame and honor has such a quick cycle that will sooner fade into oblivion. The winner(s) may not even be beholden to the crown.

In addition to the absolute gain in prize money, which in the case of Bb Pilipinas is a little too low, other deliverables must be in place for the national titleholders. Incentives in the form of “intangibles” i.e. scholarship endowments, international modeling stints, foreign travel to a country of choice, membership in national organizations of good repute, lifetime club privileges, a house and a lot, a car, etc. etc.

Give the girls the motivation and they will conquer if the avenues are open to pursue. Provide winners the sophistication of foreign travel to enhance self-confidence. Expose the winner(s) to the cultural imperatives of a foreign environment. Fund the organization enough to enable the girls to obtain as much training, provide them with impeccable consultants who will polish their innate capabilities. Increase the absolute amount of prize money that in real values the prospective winner will find hard to ignore.

National search organizations, Bb Pilipinas in particular, need to fine-tune their search methodologies and re-focus on the inherent qualities of the candidates (as opposed to belabored but unreliable result of attempted but failed makeovers i.e. candidates sourced nationwide from better schools, naturally inclined with faultless communication skills, raised in desirable social background); embark on a campaign of image re-building like never before (calling Lions, Rotary Int’l), revise organizational hierarchies (Bb Pilipinas Org) and place the right personalities with the best qualifications for the job; enlist the assistance and advice of well meaning organizations and individuals (designers, make-up artists, professional photographers) similarly involved in these line of activities; install support structures for the tasks of micro-managing even raw potential to polished achievers in a continuous process of re-training, re-educating and re-inventing the individual titleholders (move the contest to a earlier date to allow for immersing the candidate in her designated role).

This may seem like a tall order for a fledgling ill–prepared, traditionally inclined beauty pageant organization. In retrospect, we have had enough of the lesser substitute(s) in the years past; if the end justifies the means, then by all means let’s all go for it.

FINAL RANK
Bb. Pilipinas Universe: Carlene Aguilar
Bb. Pilipinas World: Gionna Cabrera
Bb. Pilipinas International: Joanna Rafbel Serrano
Bb. Pilipinas Maja International 2005: Gwennaelle Ruais
Bb. Pilipinas Tourism International: Precious Lara Quigaman
Spoiler: Joanne Padilla

inkdrops:
Carlene, for me, is perfect for any of the three titles. She's a complete package... You gotta see her runway skills: KABOG! (she's not made-up at the photo above)

Joanna Rafbel reminds me a lot of Pebbles Asis (Bb. Pilipinas Universe '87). I love her vibrant & bubby personality! She can also do well in Thailand.

Gionna (5"10 in height) is close to perfection. It's hard to find flaws from her. She's brainy too!

Joanne Padilla cannot be ignored in this competition. Very classy. Mafae Yunon clone.

Precious has the "it" factor, confidence & charisma but she lacks energy. I also love her accent. We'll find Miriam Quiambao in her after a major overhaul.

Gwen, what can I say, she can easily snatch any of the crowns. Tall, modern & chic. She needs to take the Bb. Pilipinas Pageant seriously... or else....

THE BPCI CIRCUS IS BACKKKK!!!!
(TONGUE-IN-CHEEK INITIAL IMPRESSIONS)
by: KIS

Oh, Horrors! Sacrilege! The devastatingly gorgeous Juliana P. was left devastated. Again. For the 2nd year running. That’s twice in as many years! The poor soul didn’t even get a look-in this time. Sor Maria Antonio’s habit might swing it for you next year, Julie. And what about Rashes Santos? Oh, Rashel, is it? Fabulous nose job but racy Rashel’s racy antics proved to be a bit too much for the fabulously delicate, decidedly non-racy Madame Pitoy.

Last year, it was Maricar and the mystery of the missing inch; this year, it’s Ella and the saga of the lost gowns! Tut! She should have asked Madame and The Magic Máquina to make her a copy of the gowns she had apparently lost in Mexico. Or she should have begged the ex-beauty queen from Locombia – Señora S to mere mortals like you and me – for understanding. “Oehh, que no tengo la culpa, Señora. Créame. ¡Es la verdad!” Could she have made it had La Señora been “offered” pandebonos fresh from Bogota or Medellin? And what about blaming it all on those Mexican baggage handlers at Benito Juarez International? After all, they’re notorious for losing things like, y’knowww, gownsss... suitcasesss... boxesss… Texasss… Californiaaa….New Mexiii…. Sorry; got carried away there for a second.

Anyway, back to The Señora and The Madame Show. Yanina G. says she’s keeping my heart but I’ve got the following three as the loveliest, the prettiest, the most captivating, the most exciting – SO FAR:

GWEN RUAIS -- Drop the “S” ladies. The surname’s French! She’s only half-French but the attitude is totally French. Fact is, she’s so “French-ly” confident that she turned up at the Araneta – yes, the Coliseum – and presented herself to the screening committee sans make up. No lipstick. No mascara. Nothing. At all. The audacity of the girl! Or was it sheer stupidity of youth? Well, Ms Sears Tower herself was either supremely self-assured or just plain clueless but apparently, she’s so captivating that evening that she practically handcuffed one of Señora’s glittery rubbish bins – woops, crowns – to herself the minute she walked in! And with Madame Pitoy, purring like an asthmatic cat.

CARLENE AGUILAR – The name is Spanglish as normal but, apparently, she’s as Pinoy as won-ton soup. So all of Binondo must be going wild! And why not? She is indeed very pretty, after all. From the curl of the lips, to the tilt of the nose, to the slant of the eyes; her face is perfectly symmetrical. Almost. But if she is to appeal to a wider audience (read: intl judges) and assuming she snatches that Bangkok ticket from under Gwen’s bra; CA must achieve that same air of cosmopolitan sophistication that Quiambao managed in 99 because right now her aura is very race-specific. Oh all right, too Chinese! Now, can we drop those plucked eyebrows, ladies!? She looks very cosmo wearing those contacts but really, she should have been reminded that when screening for Madame Pitoy and Señora S? You lose the cheongsam.

ALLAINE ASUNCION -- She shares her name with the Paraguayan capital but alas, she’s no Yanina G. But! But! She’s just as classy and as striking as the divine one that Trumpy allowed to get away in Quito. Stylish as well. Clock the hairstyle: gather at the front; pull back; pin right at the top of the head. Yes, that old “don’t-I-look-soo-understatedly-elegant” hairstyle favoured by the chic. And the pageant patty. Plus, note that she hasn’t allowed herself to be photographed up front. Left a bit; tilt down a bit, look up a bit. Pageant-savvy. And very Mario Testino! As that sharp-eyed Peruvian says: if the nose is shaped more like a dome than a tent then you really must go for the angles. Or a rhinoplasty.

And my dark horse? That lovable pest that always messes up the line up year-in, year-out? Nope, Carla Gay is soooo 2003. This year, it’s Giona Cabrera. But she’s better looking. Actually, she's just a millimeter away from bumping Asuncion out of my top 3.

Clearing some things
by: Taga-Binibini

Speculations are going around about Rashel Santos' and Ella Evangelista's disqualifications. Once and for all, let me clarify this. Please do not assume that this is an official message. I do not have the permission of BB, and I will never have one.

ON RASHEL:

Let me say this once and for all, that indeed, we read the messageboards and websites. Oftentimes, we are hurt by the below-the-belt criticisms on the girls, but I think we have to bear with this part. WE DO PAY ATTENTION, however, to constructive criticisms amd suggestions. Some are implementable and some are not, owing to other concerns.

So when Mabuhaybeauties released photos of Rashel, we did research on her. She is very pretty and naturally we were excited. So later, we knew that is a protege of a well-known shobiz talent manager. Our research however, made us stumble on HER website which contains racy photos of her. We were shocked to learn that she indeed has many super sexy photos, and she appears to be very proud of them, thus, the possession of the site. That was the reason for her disqualification. Like it or not, we still hope that our girls would have the decency to distinguish the line between what should be made public and what should be left to the private sphere.

ON ELLA:

Her case is different. And let me say this, again, once and for all, that it is NOT JUST ABOUT GOWNS. "just about gowns" is a very petty matter indeed. A number of candidates have lost theirs before and we took them for granted.

It is different however, if you took them. When Ella told us that she lost some luggage, we thought that they were just wrongly routed and in the end, they will end up here. But they were totally gone. We understood her, honestly, and in fact, she appeared in BB. 2004 pageant, if you will remember. However, later on, we heard that she wore one of the 'lost' gowns in a provincial sortie. That alarmed us, of course. And after a while, we also learned that she has been using some paraphernalia (that were supposedly packed with the gowns) that she also reportedly lost. That betrayed the trust that we gave her. So when we learned that she is applying, we gave her a 'return them' ultimatum. She failed. So for these reasons, she was disqualified.

We hope you appreciate our concerns.I will also not post anything after this so any post bearing this name is bogus.
