AN INTERVIEW WITH 2004 BINIBINING PILIPINAS WORLD,
MA. KARLA RABANAL BAUTISTA
By Eton Bonifacio Concepcion

Bb. Pilipinas World, Ma. Karla R. Bautista is now in Sanya, China competing for the 2004 Miss World Pageant. Undoubtedly, Karla has what it takes to win the Philippines’ most cherished beauty title. Karla was able to answer a few questions before she left for Sanya.

 • Ni hau, Karla? You’re in deep preparation for the 2004 Miss World finals, what is the hardest part of it?
I’ve been undergoing a lot of training for Miss World and it certainly is not easy preparing in every possible way for my competition. But I think the hardest part would be preparing myself to leave the country, be in a foreign place knowing there are millions of Filipinos out here willing to support me.

 •  How do you take the fact that the Philippines has had back to back finalists?
It could actually work in my advantage, because now everyone knows that the Philippines is a player in the pageant. But the pressure this time is really great. I have to equal if not surpass the achievements of my two predecessors.

 • How was it growing up in Cebu? How would you describe yourself as a child?
Cebu is really a great place to live in. It’s actually as cosmopolitan as Makati already yet it’s not as fast-paced. You still can find time to unwind after a day’s work. The beach is just 30 minutes away! I had a happy childhood. I was playful, kulit and I’ve always been a dreamer. Even back then, I’ve always known that I’ll be a beauty queen. =)

 • When did you get interested in beauty contests? Is Miss Cebu your first experience?
Even when I was still 5, 6 years old, my playmates and I would always hold our own beauty contests. My sister and brother would be the judges and they never let me win! I’ve always told them, “someday, I’ll be Ms. Philippines.” It was what my Mom wanted me to be also. Two years ago, I joined Ms. Cebu. It was actually my mom’s last wish before she passed away. It’s my first major beauty pageant, a stepping stone for Bb. Pilipinas.

 • You’re beauty and brain personified. What do you think is the relevance of beauty contests in this day and age?
We can’t really deny the fact that some people think that beauty pageants are outdated, even degrading. What we could do is prove to all that beauty pageants are relevant. It helps us find beautiful woman who’ll not just embody the virtues of Filipinos but would serve as a catalyst of change, an essential instrument for moral, social and political progress. Beauty pageants give us a sense of hope also that amidst crisis, beautiful things could still happen.

 • Has your life changed since winning Binibining Pilipinas?
It can’t be avoided now that people recognize me. The biggest change would be in terms of schedule. I have now a very hectic schedule; I don’t own my own time now. I have my obligations and commitments. But aside from that, I’m still the same simple girl who enjoys being with family and friends.

 • You must have plenty of admirers, what do you look or in a man? Do you believe in an ideal man?
I do? I’m not sure about that. Hehe! =)

 • How do you face challenges?
My source of strength and inspiration has always been my late mother. Whenever challenges come my way, I think of her. Whatever success I have, I’m dedicating to her.

 • How did your family take your being a beauty queen?
They are very supportive. It was my mother’s wish before she died that I join Bb. Pilipinas.

 • What are your plans after Sanya?
I hope to get a degree in Law or Broadcasting.

 •  Many Filipinos are throwing their support for you to win Miss World. What can we expect from Karla in Sanya?
I think I’m well-prepared and confident. I would be able to bring home the Miss World crown.

 • What do you think of the “Miss World - You Decide” choosing of the winner?
I think Miss World wants to improve their judging process to keep up with the trend of reality TV. I agree that the viewers should have the right to choose the winner.

 • Thank you so much, Karla! Goodluck!
Hsieh hsieh, Eton!
